A progress report on the creation of a memorial statue in Wiveliscombe to the late great Keith Floyd

....and the mission of a small group to raise the money, in private donations, to make it possible.
Follow the blog posts below to track our progress and take a look at the Proposal for more information about the Keith Floyd Memorial Project and how you could help.

The story so far...

Back in March, after deciding that it would be a good idea to erect a bronze and marble statue of Keith in Wiveliscombe, the town where he spent most of his schooldays, Hilary Miller and I began the tricky task of writing a schedule and plan of action.

This done, we began the real work: finding references (including reading 3 autobiographies and watching countless DVDs); drawings; costings; deciding funding sources; writing and designing the proposal booklet (see the Proposal) and setting realistic targets.
  • A steering committee was formed in April to oversee fund raising and ensure good practice.
  • A constitution was written.
  • The 'Keith Floyd Memorial Project' bank account was set up.
  • An accountant was appointed.
  • The Proposal booklet was printed and its distribution commenced.
  • Consultations were carried out with local interested parties and a public 'comments' book was lodged in the Wiveliscombe Community Office.
  • County wide newspaper articles have been published and one local radio interview given.

The support has been remarkable. The Project now has the backing of some very influential personalities and celebrities from the world of TV and gourmet cooking, including:

...and many others.

A maquette - a one sixth sized sketch model - is in progress and when finished it should help us all to visualise the final sculpture.

  2. I,ve been a massive Keith Floyd fan since he first hit the screens in the early eighties. I'm also a BIG Stranglers fan, but that's another story. I really hope you get enough funding to erect a full size statue of the great man. It would be nice to see if David Pritchard could raise awarenes within the BBC to raise more funds from the rich "celeberity chefs". I recently read David Pritchard's book 'Shooting the cook' and i,ve got to say it is brilliant. I meet Keith once, at one of this shows in Sheffield October 2005, and had a long chat with him, he was every bit as nice as you see on TV, a truly great man and a great night, he even had a kiss for my wife. I remember looking back at Keith as we were leaving the show and he was the last one left on stage signing a final autograph (got a pic of this), not many celebs would have done that. Anyway hope all goes well, and if a win the lottery I will pay for the statue myself, all the best Brian Smith (Reepham, Lincolnshire) 21 April 2012
